Tim Wakefield is set to get a cortisone shot in his lower back on Thursday, and the Sox hope this will alleviate the pressure by a herniated disk, but the shot will limit his activity for at least a couple of days. After those couple of days, he will again begin to pitch, and could possibly start against the Baltimore Orioles o=during a series set for September 18-20. Though, if Wakefield does not feel up to it, Francona would be willing to delay the start. Wakefield has 11 wins and received his first All-Star Game selection this year, but the herniated disk is causing discomfort in his leg, which was shown during his September 5 start against the White Sox when he was unable to cover first base on an infield grounder by Chris Getz.
WHAT I THINK: If Wakefield gets back to form, the All-Star, it will be a bonus for the Sox, who have gone through many pitchers. If he doesn't get back to form, and is unable to pitch, there's Buchholz, who has won his last 3 of 4, and is young and able to pitch, and there is also Byrd, who was recently resigned, and is starting tonight against the O's. I personally think that he will not get back to the form he was in before. He is 43 years old, has been playing this game for 17 years, and has been injury-plagued. I hope that he gets back to form, but it's a long shot.
